Twisted Stone #3 – White Pocket

The 3rd stop for our desert adventure was the amazing twisted stones of White Pocket. White Pocket is far away from everything on the Paria Plateau of Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. It is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from either Kanab, UT or Page, AZ largely on dirt and sandy roads requiring true 4-wheel drive.

Dragon’s Eye – I love the solitary tree growing in the stark stone. This was taken in the morning after camping nearby.
Water Pocket – Similar to the shot above but no tree and taken the previous evening.

I loved the amazing formations at White Pocket. They are stunning, but I struggled with finding my creativity. I had been here with a photo workshop a few years previously and those compositions were burned in my memory. The following two compositions were shown to the group during that workshop.

Wrinkles in Stone
Ice Cream Machine

Twisted Stone #2 – The Wave

WE GOT LUCKY! We won a permit for the daily lottery to hike the Wave. This may have been the highlight of this trip. The uniformity of the twisted and curved rock in this area is remarkable. Just as much fun was the hike to get there, about 3 miles over the desert, using landmarks and Gaia GPS to navigate.
