Forest and Snow

The other day we had a cold storm come through San Diego dropping snow in the local mountains. From a photographic point of view, I look for bad weather to create interesting compositions in nature. I started with sunrise overlooking Lake Henshaw.

After sunrise, I continued to Palomar Mountain State Park. The road had a thin coat of frozen snow. Fresh snow hung on the trees and grasses. Once in the park, I walked one of my favorite trails. I was drawn to the roots of these giant oaks clutching the earth.

I love being the photographic explorer, going out with no idea of what I will find, and then discovering compositions. I was initially drawn to the snow laden branches of the trees in the photo above. As I stood there observing, the sun began creeping between trees creating conditions for this sun star.

I recently saw some photos that used intentional camera movement (ICM) to create abstract images. Here is one of my photos using this technique in the forest.
