Capturing Nature’s Beauty in the Eastern Sierra

A month ago, I drove up to the eastern Sierra to capture fall colors. I drove through a storm for most of the day after leaving San Diego. By the time I reached the Owens Valley, the system had moved east toward the White Mountains, leaving clear skies to the west. The conditions were ideal for a rainbow—late in the day, sun low in the sky, and rain falling in the east. Soon, a brilliant rainbow appeared. Although there was no strong foreground element for my photo, I found a safe spot to pull over and captured the moment.

The following morning I started my day at hot Creek, hoping for some nice light at sunrise.

Once the sun rose, I discovered the real star of the morning, Mount Morrison.

This was only the beginning! For the rest of this day and the next few, I captured plenty of scenes with fall color and fresh snow. Stay tuned!

Snowy Autumn Magic in the Sierra Mountains

Mid-October brought a fresh coat of snow to the Sierra Mountains. I drove up during the storm and woke the next morning to find the peaks dusted white, with snow reaching down the slopes. I spent a few incredible days in the eastern Sierra Mountains, drawn not only by the striking mix of autumn color and fresh snow, but also by the low, shifting clouds that transformed the scenery from one moment to the next.

This photograph was taken at Conway Summit, where I spent several hours watching the light play across the landscape. At this moment, the light softened as a cloud drifted over the scene. I used my telephoto zoom lens to capture these aspen trees, highlighting a blend of brilliant autumn colors among branches that were already bare of leaves.
